Back in the incident room, the rest of the team were hard at it and getting nowhere fast.

Sara filled them in on what they’d learned so far. Jill tentatively raised her hand to interrupt.

“We’re not in the classroom, Jill, speak freely.”

“Something occurred to me earlier, so I did some digging of my own. I hope you don’t mind, boss.”

“Why should I? I always appreciate members of my team working on their own initiative. What’s up?”

“I looked into whether Gillian had a life insurance policy.”

“And? Did she?” Sara replied.

Jill nodded. “Yep, for two hundred and fifty grand.”

“When was it taken out?”

Jill ran a finger down her notebook. “Back in February, this year.”

Sara contemplated this for a second and then snapped her fingers together. “Around the time the notes started appearing. Very interesting indeed.”

“What are you thinking?” Carla sipped at her coffee.

“Two scenarios immediately spring to mind. The first that Danny panicked when he received the notes—wait, did he insure himself at the same time, Jill?”

“He did, and the children, which I thought was strange.”

“Hmm…it does seem to be odd. Not sure I’ve heard of anyone insuring their kids before, or is that me simply being clueless about these things?”

“I haven’t either,” Jill replied. “You were saying, boss?”

The phone rang on Jill’s desk, and she answered it.

“Ah, yes, either what I said about the first scenario, or Danny is behind all of this. What does everyone else think?”

Jill waved the phone at her and mouthed, ‘It’s DCI Price wanting a word with you’.

Sara crossed the room and took the phone from Jill. “Hello, ma’am, what can I do for you?”

“In my office at once, DI Ramsey. Don’t dilly-dally either.”

“On my way.” She gave the phone back to Jill and cringed. “I’ve been summoned. Talk through the different scenarios amongst yourselves, and we’ll pick this up when I get back. Wish me luck.”

Everyone called out their best wishes as Sara sped out of the room and up the corridor to the Lioness’ Den. Her adrenaline pumped her blood around her veins faster than molten lava. It felt just as hot, too.

Mary, DCI Price’s PA, was on her feet and holding the door open for her. “Good luck,” she whispered. “DI Ramsey to see you, ma’am.”

“Thank you, Mary. Get us both a coffee, will you? Take a seat, Inspector.”

“Have I done something wrong?”

“You tell me, have you?”

Sara closed her eyes as it dawned on her why her boss had requested her company. “I take it Danny Jenkinson has been in touch with you.”

“He has. Now, why should he feel the need to ring me, do you think?”

“It’s all quite innocent, if you’re prepared to hear me out and not judge me from the outset.”

Carol Price wagged her finger. “Cut the crap, stop being so defensive. When have I not stood in your corner?”

“Fair comment. I apologise. In all honesty, I get the impression that Danny doesn’t take kindly to women being around him.”

“Are you telling me he’s a misogynist?”

“That’s how it’s coming across to me.
